Flesh and blood alone cannot halt the advance of iron and steel. To stop the tanks, we need people to place blocks on the road and throw sand into the gears. Above: A tank drives through Beijing after the suppression of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.

DW | ANKA

After the Istanbul concert, however, the band’s promising future seems to now be a thing of the past. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating them for “indecent and immoral acts” and “exhibitionism,” with the stage show said to have “violated and offended the feelings of shame, morality and the moral values of society.” In addition, it’s claimed the women have a bad influence on children and young people…. Oktay Saral, chief adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, called the band members “immoral, shameless, demonic creatures” in a Turkish post on X and demanded legal action to prevent them from “further alleged exhibitionist acts.”

Ban Private Jets

Jacobin | C Ord/Getty/Iconix
Jacobin | C Ord/Getty/Iconix

In just one cross-country trip, a single private jet, the Gulfstream IV, emits nearly double the CO2 that the average American emits in an entire year. Owning and flying in a private jet is a reckless behavior in times of climate crisis, and the billionaire, private jet–owning class are conspicuous carbon consumers…. Right now, the United States has more private jets than the next top ten countries combined, and 71 percent of all private jet flights take place in North America. Private jet growth in the United States is projected to rise by $270 billion in new jets over the next decade, encouraged by… billion-dollar tax cuts, which included a 100-percent write-off on all private jets—in addition to the fact that private jets are already taxed at a rate forty times less than commercial flights.
