Most Australians agree there’s a housing crisis. But they differ on what’s causing it – and how to fix it

The Conversation | D England/AAP
The Conversation | D England/AAP

While all parties agreed housing needed urgent attention, they were divided over how to fix it. Labor and the Coalition focused on first homebuyers and housing supply. The Greens emphasised rent control and social housing, and One Nation campaigned on cutting immigration and taxes on building materials for new houses.

Is your medication made in a contaminated factory? The FDA won’t tell you.

ProPublica | M Wares
ProPublica | M Wares

Reporting Highlights
Hidden Drug Names: For decades, the FDA has blacked out the names of generic drugs on inspection reports for foreign factories that were found to have safety and quality violations.
Patients in the Dark: The practice has prevented patients, doctors, and pharmacists from knowing whether manufacturing failures have made medications ineffective or unsafe.
Pill Bottle Mysteries: Consumers are limited in what they can learn about the quality of their drugs because labels on pill bottles often don’t list the manufacturer or the factory’s address.

I thought Labour would fix everything. I was wrong

New Statesman | L Agnew
New Statesman | L Agnew

The postwar British political establishment is collapsing. The Conservatives threw themselves into a death spiral last year, though it had been a long time in the making. Now in government, Labour is heading in the same direction, corkscrewing downwards, touching 15 points in one recent poll and haemorrhaging votes in every direction.

Thai villagers have moved four times to escape rising sea levels – life on the climate-change frontline

The Conversation | D Marks
The Conversation | D Marks

My new research has found that villagers have been forced to move away from the sea four times, losing both land and livelihoods in the process. The government has not provided compensation for damaged homes or financial assistance to help them relocate. Many younger villagers, wearying of constant displacement and finding it increasingly difficult to find fish as sediment makes the sea shallower, have left for jobs in Bangkok on construction sites, in factories and other workplaces. Those who remain are mostly older villagers.
