Angi Naylor joined the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) as a student member in 1980 and was a member of the SWU Executive Committee from when the union was formed in 2011 until her retirement last year. Angi receiving her BASW Lifetime Achievement Award from SWU General Secretary, John McGowan.

Should we scrap private health insurance rebates and direct the funding to public hospitals?

If you’re one of the 45% of Australians with private health insurance, chances are the government pays, or has paid, a proportion of your premiums via rebates. Taxpayer spending on these private health insurance rebates is projected to reach A$7.6 billion in 2025. The rebates are a key source of revenue for private hospitals. In 2022–23, private health funds contributed $9.7 billion. This is around 45% of the $21.5 billion spent on private hospital services.

More than 100 new lawsuits have been filed against San Diego County in recent weeks by adults who claim they were taken to the Polinsky Children’s Center as minors to escape unstable homes only to be sexually assaulted by social workers who were supposed to protect them. Perhaps a minor point to some, but one unanswered question in this article – were these in fact “social workers”?
