People understand almost intuitively what “elderspeak” means. “It’s communication to older adults that sounds like baby talk,” said Clarissa Shaw, a dementia care researcher at the University of Iowa College of Nursing and a co-author of a recent article that helps researchers document its use. “It arises from an ageist assumption of frailty, incompetence, and dependence.”

Tacoma library’s first social worker makes impact with 230 aid cases in 2024

Samie Iverson is the Tacoma Public Library’s first-ever social worker on staff. She started in February of 2024 after the city approved funding for the role. Over the 10 months she was on the job in 2024, she had around 230 unique patron interactions. In just the first three months of 2025, she had more than 100 unique patron interactions.
