Researchers identified SGK1 as a key chemical connecting childhood trauma to depression and suicidal behavior. High SGK1 levels were found in the brains of suicide victims and in people with genetic variants linked to early adversity. Drugs that block SGK1 could offer a new kind of antidepressant, especially for patients resistant to SSRIs.

The Conversation | MTsikas/AAP/A Giannakakis/Unsplash/D Himbrechts/AAP

In the flurry of action in Parliament House in the final moments of the sitting year, the government passed a bill that escaped the attention of most. New changes to social security law mean a person’s income support can now be cancelled because they are subject to an outstanding arrest warrant for a serious offence. These are people merely accused of crimes, not found guilty of them.

Why protecting Colorado children from dying of domestic violence is such a hard problem

The Conversation
The Conversation

Domestic violence homicide is persistent. Local, state and federal governments spend millions of dollars each year to operate hotlines, fund shelters and engage in prevention programs for victims of domestic violence. Yet more than one-third of homicides of women are still perpetrated by intimate partners. And there has been a steady increase nationally in domestic violence-related deaths of children over the past 20 years.
