New federal rules are expected to change how much students can borrow from the feds to pay for certain graduate degrees. But in New Mexico, the state is reminding students focused on social work that there are local programs that can help pay for degrees in a field where they said many more professionals are needed.
As President Bill Clinton’s Treasury secretary, Summers engineered the deregulation that created the 2008 financial crisis, and then, as President Barack Obama’s economic adviser, Summers made sure the postcrisis rescue plan prioritized serving the bankers throwing millions of Americans out of their homes. Those decisions should have ended Summers’s public-facing career, but they didn’t. He was instead rewarded with Harvard University’s presidency; platforms at the New York Times and Bloomberg; gigs at a hedge fund, an artificial intelligence giant, and a cryptocurrency firm; and a distinguished senior fellowship at the Center for American Progress, where he was slated to sculpt Democrats’ agenda.
War means death and destruction for most. But for the arms industry it means big profits. How we can hold our governments and institutions to account for their complicity in the trade of weaponry and military equipment? Why do our leaders continue to funnel money into an industry that is so destructive to people and the planet? How can we build stronger links across borders to strengthen our challenge to the weapons industry?
Under the current system, many migrants can apply for permanent settlement in the UK once they have lived here for a set number of years. The new proposals would replace that route with ‘earned settlement’ which means that instead of qualifying through time spent in the UK alone, people would need to meet a wider set of requirements.
