University of Manitoba News | F Yeasmin
University of Manitoba News | F Yeasmin

In Winnipeg’s public spaces like libraries, hospitals, shelters, and government service buildings, safety has often meant exclusion: watching, pushing aside, or banning those already marginalized by poverty, mental health struggles, and discrimination. But what if safety was reimagined as belonging, where the measure is not how many people are removed, but how many feel they truly belong?

For conservatives who believe the court should aggressively dismantle federal protections for reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, and the administrative state, Hawley is a near-perfect judicial nominee. For everyone else, especially those living in the Eighth Circuit, she represents an alarming escalation of the attack on their civil rights.

‘Unrelenting demand’ overstretching Cafcass social workers but practice is improving, finds Ofsted

CommunityCare | byBALLARD
CommunityCare | byBALLARD

A recent report by Domestic Abuse Commissioner Nicole Jacobs (above), covering practice in 2023-24, echoed some of the findings of the 2020 report. It found that cases involving reported domestic abuse frequently ended with children having joint residence, or unsupervised contact with, the alleged perpetrator due to a “pro-contact culture” in the family courts that minimised abuse. Survivors spoke of Cafcass practitioners being reluctant to record their allegations of domestic abuse and of discouraging them from raising allegations because contact with the perpetrator would be ordered regardless.
