Following a qualitative approach, 2 case studies are used to assess the merits of research interviews and memoirs as story sources for exploring gay men’s ongoing family ties, especially with parents and siblings. Theoretical and methodological frameworks on narrative analysis and family relationships are examined and applied to studying the 2 cases. Each methodology contributes insights into the family lives of gay men, and each has methodological strengths and weaknesses. Using both helps paint a clearer, more inclusive picture of gay men in families. Suggestions for improving each narrative source for research purposes and implications for change are discussed.
