Cultural health practices outside of conventional health care settings can hinder the reduction of health disparities disfavoring racial and ethnic minorities in the United States (U.S.), particularly when such practices are hidden or involve the use of controlled substances that have the potential to exacerbate disease. Injections from picuristes are a hidden health practice among some Haitian immigrants in Miami-Dade County, Florida that may contribute to health disparities for them and others in their community, based on the frequency of injections and on the types of substances injected.
