Principles of Effective Transnational Networking for Global Social Work Education: A Case Study

The current economic recession has put severe fiscal limitations on global educational initiatives for social work educators in the United States. Many academic institutions are seeking to respond to this by creating partnerships with social work schools overseas through the formation of transnational networking endeavors. Transnational networking necessitates structures that facilitate institutions with social work and social development missions in different countries to work together under specific guidelines. This article describes two successful transnational networking partnerships between the School of Social Work at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), the Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB) in Dhaka, Bangladesh and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), in Mumbai, India. Furthermore, the collaborative partnership with a local institution in the United States is discussed as well as how this model could help facilitate these two transnational networking initiatives. Reflections on these experiences offer valuable lessons, and some critical components are recommended for successful transnational networking partnerships.
