Emerging models of psychopathology are beginning to deviate from the multicategorical diagnostic frameworks established in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and International Classification of Diseases. Transdiagnostic approaches—models and interventions that target common etiological factors and mechanisms across multiple diagnoses—have been developed and extensively evaluated and hold considerable promise for reducing the burden of mental illness, as well as easing dissemination and accessibility. This article provides an overview of the key transdiagnostic cognitive behavioural models and interventions for the treatment of negative emotional disorders—generally defined as anxiety and depressive disorders—highlighting their commonalities and differences and providing a comprehensive summary of the evidence bases. Transdiagnostic cognitive behaviour therapy for negative emotional disorders has demonstrated evidence of efficacy and effectiveness and emerging evidence of cost-effectiveness, although differences across protocols are apparent. Future directions for both research and clinical practice are offered. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
