Improving intrauterine contraceptive device follow-up with a scan-only clinic model in a specialist community contraception service

Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services routinely manage complex contraceptive cases within specialist clinics. These extended appointments often include both clinical assessment and procedures. However, a significant number of patients attending these clinics require only an ultrasound and expert clinical review without the need for further intervention. Non-visible threads are a common clinical concern.1 Studies have reported these complications to be as high as 30–50% following immediate postpartum insertion, yet service pathways remain inconsistent.1 Appropriate counselling and investigation are essential to confirm intrauterine contraception (IUC) placement and exclude expulsion or perforation.

Despite SRH services being well positioned to manage these cases effectively, patients are often referred to secondary services or booked into specialist appointments, resulting in unnecessary delays, increased costs and inefficient use of resources.
