A survey of the applications of trauma-informed commitments to functional analyses.

Behavior Analysis: Research and Practice, Vol 25(2), May 2025, 57-78; doi:10.1037/bar0000302

Behavior analysis has contributed a robust technology for assessing challenging behavior exhibited by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. However, little is currently known about the effect of a client’s trauma history on their experiences with, or outcomes of, functional analyses (FAs). As such, few practice guidelines related to trauma-informed FAs exist. Rajaraman, Austin, et al. (2022) outlined four core commitments of trauma-informed care that may be broadly incorporated into behavior analytic practice. The current study explores the application of those commitments to the FA of challenging behavior and summarizes the outcomes of a survey of behavior analysts in relation to practice recommendations.
