Abortion skills and workforce 50 years on: an ageing workforce in need of rejuvenation

The UK is sometimes portrayed as the abortion capital of Europe. While this should be celebrated as a mark of the excellent care provided to people in the UK (and to others who come to us from more restrictive jurisdictions), it is framed as a problem and a cause for shame by anti-choice campaigners.

Our role in advocacy

As healthcare professionals, we must make the argument for the place of abortion in society and emphasise the need for the full range of choice and options in pregnancy.1 2 Abortion is healthcare and no one should be forced to continue a pregnancy against their wishes. Anyone who has worked overseas in settings where very many deaths from unsafe abortion continue will appreciate the value of safe, legal abortion (as will anyone with knowledge of its history here).
