This article explores the intersection of state violence, race and gender in the context of Black women’s creative practice. Drawing on a range of examples from Black cultural production, including AI and theatre, the article demonstrates the ways in which Black women are both witnesses and victims of state-sponsored violence and offers a close examination of how Black artists are creating from this space of danger to Black life. The article ultimately argues for an intersectional approach to performance studies, one that takes seriously the experiences and perspectives of Black women and that recognises the ways in which state violence operates as a tool of oppression and control that is intimately tied to race and gender.
