The physical processes that contribute to balance may decline as humans age. In exercise-based balance training, the most effective intervention for improving balance and falls-reduction among older adults, the type of exercise is set first, then intensity, then time. Clinical decision making about type of exercise program is based on examination and assessment of the person, including their goals and contributing impairments. Intensity is poorly reported, but 2 tools to measure and modulate intensity have been developed. Time component recommendations vary: most common are 2 to 3 times per week for 30-45 min for 12 weeks.
