Do you remember Howard Beale? Portrayed by Peter Finch in the 1976 movie Network, he was the evening news anchor who, after being told by William Holden that he was losing his job due to low ratings, urged America to express their anger at crime, low employment, poverty, and a host of other social ills. During his broadcast that night, he told the country to go to their windows, open them, and yell, “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.” The flailing Beale soon becomes very popular with an audience that feels his frustration. What some may not recall is that Beale’s story, while a bit tongue-in-cheek at times, has a rather bleak ending. It is also haunted by racial and ethnic stereotypes that, even in 1976, were problematic. But Beale’s populist outrage message resonated with many in the public.
