As physicians in the United States attempt to address the evolving needs of the American healthcare system, dual-degree programs for physicians have become an avenue for developing deep expertise beyond clinical care that may have broad impacts across the healthcare system (IHS Markit, 2021; Keisler-Starkey & Bunch, 2020). In the last decade both the prevalence and popularity of dual-degree programs have risen (Goyal et al., 2015; Reilly et al., 2021). Popular master’s degrees among physicians include the master of public health (MPH), master of public policy (MPP), and master of business administration (MBA; Alamri, 2018). One degree, however, has been largely absent despite its close proximity to and relationship with the practice of medicine: the MSW.
