Abstract
The treatment of acute psychiatric disorders usually focuses on clinical recovery, aiming to alleviate patients’ psychiatric symptoms and reduce functional disability. However, personal recovery is also important because both clinical and personal recovery together affect future planning and treatment motivation. The effect of interventions promoting personal recovery in patients affected by acute psychiatric disorders has not been elucidated. This prospective study aimed to determine the effects of illness management and recovery program and cognitive remediation therapy in patients hospitalized with an acute psychiatric illness. In addition to their standard therapy, patients included in the study received the combined treatment of Illness Management and Recovery Program and Frontal/Executive Program. Personal recovery scores assessed with two different scales were higher at the end of the treatment compared to its beginning. Our findings indicate the significance of incorporating personal recovery interventions early in the therapeutic process of patients with an acute psychiatric illness.
