Current special education law mandates that educators use scientifically based practices, and in addition, educators should deliver refined instruction for learners with disabilities. Applied behavior analysis, based on the premise of increasing socially significant behaviors, embodies many interventions that adhere to evidence-based teaching practices. Discrete trial teaching is an intervention that can be implemented in the classroom setting and has been found to have strong benefits for students when the practice is delivered with consistency. This article offers classroom implementation instructions paired with validation for implementing discrete trial teaching when working with students with autism and other exceptionalities.
