Creating a culture of inclusivity for employees with sensory disabilities: Best practices for organizations.

Consulting Psychology Journal, Vol 75(3), Sep 2023, 225-239; doi:10.1037/cpb0000226

Organizations have a responsibility to create a culture that is welcoming and comfortable for all employees, including those with disabilities. However, very little information has been published on best practices for creating an inclusive culture other than what is readily available in government documents. We provide best practices for organizations beyond what is found in the literature to help employers foster an inclusive workplace environment. In this article we review what it means to have a sensory disability and how that affects one’s experience at work and highlight specific accommodations that organizations can make to improve inclusion for employees with sensory disabilities. Specifically, we address equipment and design accommodations and modifications that can be implemented upon hire, as well as ongoing accommodations that the employer can provide. Additionally, we highlight practices that coworkers and organizations can adopt. These include communication practices, accessibility improvements, and considerations for socialization during and after work. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
