This briefing provides an overview of information on teenage pregnancy. It has been written to
inform the Health and Sport Committee’s Inquiry on this theme. It offers data on national level
trends in Scotland and reflects on research evidence about the problems associated with early
pregnancy. It also sets out the current national policy context. Finally, the briefing highlights
evidence on what works to reduce teenage pregnancy. A key message is that, as there are a
range of factors that impact on rates of teenage pregnancy – many of which are beyond the
remit or capacity of people working in sexual health services – a multi-agency response is
required.
