Recommendations on screening for depression in adults

Depression is a mood disorder that
affects the way a person feels, thinks
or behaves, which may impair social or
occupational functioning.1 The onset of depression
can be triggered by biological, psychosocial
or environmental factors, such as traumatic
life events. Those who experience an episode of
depression are at increased risk of experiencing
future episodes. Major depression is characterized
by 1 or more major depressive episodes.1 A
major depressive episode is defined by the presence
of 5 or more of 9 key symptoms of depression
during a 2-week period and a change from
previous functioning
