Testimony of Virginia P. Reno: "Securing the Future of the Social Security Disability Insurance Program"

Virginia P. Reno

December 2011

Testimony of Virginia P. Reno, Vice President for Income Security at  the National Academy of Social Insurance, at a hearing on "Securing the Future of the Social Security Disability Insurance Program," before the Subcommittee on Social Security, Committee on Ways and Means, U.S. House of Representatives. December 2nd, 2011

The testimony makes the following points:

  1. Past growth in the program is due largely to demographics – a sign that it is working as intended.
  2. People critically need the benefits. As a society, we need the protection.
  3. Criteria for getting benefits are very strict and they do not appear to have become more lenient over time.
  4. The program is affordable going forward.
