Emergency Department (ED) Visits Involving the Muscle Relaxant Carisoprodol

Carisoprodol is not federally classified as a
controlled substance, and thus its prescribing and
dispensing are not monitored by State-mandated
Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs designed
to prevent diversion and misuse of prescription
drugs. Tracking emergency department (ED)
visits involving carisoprodol can provide data to
help policymakers and health professionals to
understand emerging problems associated with
the use of this drug and to consider appropriate
safeguards
