Nursing and residential care facilities and their residents and front-line workers have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. By February 2021, approximately 70% of COVID-19-related deaths had occurred in long-term care homes, and 24,000 long-term care home staff had contracted the virus. To help guide policy decisions that benefit residents and employees, Statistics Canada is currently conducting a survey on nursing and residential care facilities, in partnership with public health agencies. The survey is collecting information about key characteristics of facilities, personnel and types of care offered, as well as information on COVID-19 pandemic health issues. Estimates from this survey will be released in spring and summer 2021. In addition to this survey, Statistics Canada is using administrative files and other sources of data to publish financial estimates for the nursing and residential care facilities industry, with separate information for private and public facilities, for 2019, the latest year of available information.
