FOCUS (Families OverComing Under Stress) is a resiliency-building program designed for military families and children facing the challenges of multiple deployment stress and combat operational stress injury during wartime. The FOCUS Independent Learning Curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in the theoretical underpinnings of the FOCUS model and the key skills that are delivered through various FOCUS service delivery modalities (e.g., Individual Family Resiliency Training, Family Resiliency Skill Building Groups). The first course in the curriculum, Basic Training, is intended to provide introductory exposure to FOCUS services. The Basic Training Course provides an opportunity for new FOCUS staff and individuals interested in learning more about the FOCUS model (e.g., community providers, educators, military leadership, chaplains, etc.) to gain knowledge regarding the impact of deployment and combat operational stress on families and children, and to become familiar with the continuum of services offered by FOCUS, the principles of a family-level, strength-based resiliency training approach, the core components of the FOCUS model, and the techniques that are used to improve the quality of family interactions, such as communication, goal-setting, and problem-solving. The remaining courses in the curriculum are for trained, certified FOCUS providers only and provide opportunities for ongoing professional development through advanced training courses, which will cover topics such as Working with Families with Younger Children, Helping Families to Communicate about Risk, and Strategies for Handling Deployment Reminders.
