GSR Sandwich Student Placements 2019-20
The Government Economic & Social Research (GESR) Team will be running a 12-month sandwich student placement scheme in 2019-20 for undergraduate students studying a social science related degree with a substantial social research methods component.
The scheme will open for applications at 12:00pm on Tuesday 09 October 2018.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible applicants must be in the penultimate year (i.e. year before the final year of study) of a social science related undergraduate degree with a substantial social research methods component. They must be on course for a 2:1 or 1st class honours degree. More information on the eligibility criteria and completing the application form can be found in our Application Guidance.
How to Apply
Please read the Application Guidance above before you apply.
The application form is now available. Only those in Word format will be accepted. Job descriptions are also available to view above.
Email your completed application form to gesrrecruitment@hmtreasury.gov.uk with GSR Sandwich Student Placements 2019-20 in the subject field. Please note that the scheme will close on Thursday 18 October 2018 at 12.00pm. No applications will be accepted after this time, so it is in your interest to submit your application within this time frame.
Candidates who are successful at the sift stage are advised that you will be randomly allocated to any of the participating departments.
Please note that some departments require candidates to have a UK footprint for 3 years in order to get security clearance i.e. HO, HMT, MHCLG, MoJ and some other departments.
Interviews
Candidates who are successful at the sift stage will be invited for interview at one of the participating Departments. Interviews will take place in November/December 2018 and you will be expected to attend in person.
Re-join GSR after your placement
This year we would like to announce an enhancement to the already successful sandwich placement scheme by making an offer of a permanent contract (subject to security clearance and graduating with a 2:1 or 1st degree) to those students to take up upon graduation (in the department they do a placement) and who:
• Are on track for 2:1 degree in social research
• Are assessed to have successfully completed their placement by their line managers
• Have passed a Civil Service Social Research Assessment Centre towards the end of their placement
This means that the placement scheme is now a gateway to a career as a government social researcher.
Equal Opportunities
The Civil Service is an Equal Opportunities employer. Candidates with disabilities (as defined in the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act) can choose to declare on their application form that they require adjustments at interview, for which we can make a range of provisions. Please contact us should you have any questions regarding this – we would be happy to help.
We are interested in your skills and aptitudes. We have no preferences for particular backgrounds or universities. We want to reflect the diversity of the country we serve.
