What happened after publication

The journal Bioethics published a critique2 about the quality of the work and the accuracy of the references, including concerns that several references did not exist. A linked editorial suggested that these references are consistent with, or raise concerns about, undeclared generative AI use.3

During the investigation the author told the journal that they wrote the text, however, they used generative AI to understand referenced sources. The author did not adequately verify these references prior to submission.

Reasons for retraction

The article is retracted due to concerns about reliability – the references cited to support its arguments do not exist. These references were included in the article due to undeclared AI use with inadequate oversight by the author, which the journal considers to be a form of misrepresentation.
