ABSTRACT
In 2021, Maryland Bill HB0401—Pregnant and Parenting Students Policies and Reports was passed, requiring school districts to create policies around excused absences, childcare and wraparound services for expectant and parenting youth. Despite existing policies, there are often inconsistencies in how expectant and parenting youth (EPY) are treated in schools. This exploratory case study aimed to understand the needs and experiences of these youth in public schools. In-depth interviews were conducted with EPY ages 14 to 19 years living across Maryland. Participants shared varying experiences with their schools, indicating a need for more intentional, proactive support from the adults and systems in their lives. There were missed opportunities to provide emotional support, share knowledge and resources around pregnancy and child development and connect youth to coordinated services. The findings highlight existing gaps and ways to enhance school policies for expectant and parenting youth.
