Empowering women to forge a path in behavior analysis.

This article discusses empowering women to forge a path in behavior analysis. Behavior analysis really resonated within the author because a student could observe the impact of intervention techniques on observable behavior, unlike other courses she had taken in psychology that were more mentalistic. From these courses, the author developed a great interest in behavior analysis and was urged by the graduate students she encountered to continue in the field. Thus, the author sought to gain more experience in this area before pursuing an advanced degree. Given the academic pedigree, one can easily see why research has always been a part of the author’s career. The author focused most of her early and early mid-career designing and conducting single-subject research during clinical intervention but then shifted to research synthesizing the findings of studies on the treatment of pediatric feeding disorder (PFD), evaluating alternative approaches to the treatment of chronic feeding problems (e.g., sensory integration and tube weaning), and summarizing clinical program outcomes. An additional project was the systematic review and meta-analysis of intensive multidisciplinary intervention of PFD. For many in the field of behavior analysis, research is a priority. The author has a commitment to teaching and mentoring to prepare the next generation of leaders in PFD, whether it is in research or practice. The author is dedicated to doing everything she can to support master’s and doctoral students and interns, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, whether they are conceptualizing the project, trying to determine how to execute it on a day-to-day basis, or preparing or editing a manuscript. However, the author will dedicate and invest just as much time with someone who is not on a research path and find just as much value preparing excellent clinicians.
