Toward better outcomes: Evolving psychopharmacologic approaches in youth psychiatry.

Translational Issues in Psychological Science, Vol 11(3), Sep 2025, 277-280; doi:10.1037/tps0000472

Despite significant advancements in the development of novel psychopharmacotherapies for the treatment of mental health conditions, several research gaps remain on how we treat these conditions and generalize our findings across populations. Adolescents and youth are particularly important populations of interest, due to both being diagnosed with mental, behavioral, and developmental disorders at increased rates but also the accompanying high rates of psychopharmacotherapy prescribing and use among this population. This introductory article provides an overview of this special section, which brings together articles led by early-career investigators that collectively explore the complex domain of psychopharmacotherapy in youth and adolescents. Collectively, articles in this issue address pediatric prescribing practices, health care disparities, and innovative uses of pharmacotherapies for co-occurring conditions, offering translational approaches that can inform future research, clinical care, and policy in psychopharmacotherapy.
