Engaging antiracist qualitative research with Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) trans and nonbinary communities: Using critical, decolonial, and liberation approaches.

Qualitative Psychology, Vol 12(2), Jun 2025, 142-161; doi:10.1037/qup0000326

In this article, we describe how researchers can use qualitative methods and theoretical frameworks (Au, 2022; Roulston & Shelton, 2015) to explore persistent, interlocking societal racial and gender oppressions and promote liberation and healing with Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) trans and nonbinary (TNB) communities. A narrative review of the extant qualitative literature with BIPOC TNB communities regarding general themes and related strengths and limitations of this literature base is provided. Theoretical frameworks and qualitative research traditions that support antiracist stances with BIPOC TNB communities are described, as well as recommendations for future work expanding this scholarship base and dismantling interlocking oppressions of white supremacy and transprejudice with BIPOC TNB communities.
