Increasing tolerance for transport in vehicles: A case study using desensitization, visual supports, and differential reinforcement.

Behavior Analysis: Research and Practice, Vol 23(3), Aug 2023, 213-221; doi:10.1037/bar0000266

The following paper details the use of visual supports, desensitization, and contingent reinforcement procedures to increase the tolerance of time spent in a facility vehicle for an adult with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A multiple-component design across trip durations was utilized to progressively introduce increasing durations of time spent in a vehicle with no aggressive behavior being noted. The participant was able to tolerate longer periods of time in the vehicle and made functional improvements in safe van riding behavior. The study documents the effective implementation of a reinforcement-based program targeted to reduce severe aggression displayed while being transported in vehicles. The outcome demonstrates a cost-effective way to integrate clients who engage in high-risk dangerous behavior into community settings. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
