Highlights: ► The RGST approach developed in China provides a structured method for sandplay therapy groups. ► Eight Chinese college students with social distress and avoidance issues participated in a RGST group. ► Participants were evaluated via SAD scores and observations of their use of sandplay items. ► The mean SAD scores decreased from 18.2 to 9.6 (about a 60% decrease) with subscale scores also lower. ► Items representing participants’ self image were more prosocial and group interaction healthier.
