Daily Living Functioning in Men with Borderline Personality Disorders: A Scoping Review

Abstract

Growing research has been conducted to understand how borderline personality disorder (BPD) affects everyday life functioning. However, studies have largely included women and there is a need to examine if the functional impacts in men differ. The aim of this scoping review is to synthetize knowledge about impacts of BPD in daily life functioning of men living with this mental health issue. Several databases were consulted to identify articles published between January 2000 and January 2022. A total of 12 articles met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Grey literature was also considered. The data was analyzed with the Human Development Model–Disability Creation Process, which documents several indicators of functioning in twelve areas of life. The functioning of men with BPD is greatly influenced by the behavior of withdrawal, which is seen across multiple domains including partner relationships, family, employment and recreation. These findings were validated by health care professionals specialized in the treatment and rehabilitation of BPD. There are gaps in many domains Including mobility, nutrition, personal care and home maintenance. This way of managing everyday life could explain why men with BPD do not seek support from service providers and are then under-represented in the literature, therefore limiting the development of more targeted resources for this group.
