Guideline Syntheses: Management of Overweight and Obesity in Children and Adolescents

Both SIGN and TES recommend implementation of a family-based, intensive lifestyle treatment program which focuses on dietary, physical activity, and behavioral modification. The groups agree that programs should target decreasing overall dietary energy intake, increasing levels of physical activity, and decreasing time spent in sedentary behaviors (screen time). With regard to physical activity, SIGN and TES both recommend 60 minutes daily of moderate to vigorous physical activity. The groups also agree that time spent doing sedentary activities (e.g., watching television, playing video games, or using computers for recreation) should be limited to less than two hours per day.
