This article explains complex trauma involves chronic or repeated, typically early-onset exposure to two or more of the forms of trauma exposure, identifies psychological maltreatment as the sleeping giant of complex trauma, and discusses the need for comprehensive assessment. The risk of placement disruption and placement in a residential treatment facility of traumatized youth is noted, and the need for child welfare personnel to be educated on the needs of complexly traumatized children and specific evidence-based treatment models is emphasized.
