The imminent demise of the National
Council of Welfare has alarmed people
interested in poverty and equity issues in
Canada. Especially worrisome is the
uncertain future of two of the Council’s most
important products, the series Welfare
Incomes and Poverty Profile. Over the
years, these reports have become invaluable
tools for the public policy community. Their
loss would leave a huge hole in Canada’s
shrinking data base and diminish our understanding
of welfare and poverty in this
country.
