Responding to children and young people’s disclosures of abuse (NCPC practice brief)

An adult’s first response to a child or young person’s disclosure of abuse can be central to a child or young person’s ongoing safety and their recovery from the trauma of abuse. Having accurate information about child abuse can help adults support a child or young person and feel less overwhelmed. This paper outlines what is known about how children make disclosures of abuse, and provides suggestions for family members, friends, other adults, and professionals on listening, reassurance, and immediate actions to take.
