South Dakota should spend opioid settlement money in the coming years to address the needs of people entering or leaving prisons and jails, according to an assessment prepared for the state Department of Social Services. The department commissioned the $325,000 statewide needs assessment to help guide the state’s investment of settlement dollars. The inadequacy of the programs and services for addicted people in the justice system was a major takeaway, the department secretary told members of the Legislature’s budget committee on Monday at the Capitol in Pierre.
