Since generative AI burst into the public consciousness in late 2022, most people have a keen or at least growing awareness of it. As of this year, 48 percent of U.S. adults say they are highly aware of AI, with another 48 percent saying they are a little aware, according to the Pew Research Center, a nonprofit and nonpartisan think tank. Just three years prior, only 26 percent said they were highly aware. Perhaps no technology in the modern era has had such a sudden and rapid awareness spike, and, as a result, state and local government technology leaders face an unprecedented situation.
