Elyse Stevens was a primary care and addiction medicine doctor in New Orleans known for taking on complex cases: people who’d been battling addiction for decades, living on the street, and chronic-pain patients on high doses of opioids. Her patient-centered approach won her awards at first. Then she came under scrutiny from her hospital and the state’s medical board, forcing her into what she describes as “exile.”
