Ageing Asia needs domestic helpers, but can it keep them safe?

In Malaysia, where nearly one in five households employs helpers, high levels of exploitation persist, according to the International Domestic Workers Federation’s website. The federation said in a report that such workers were not protected under the standard provisions of the country’s Employment Act, which had created a perception that they were not “formal employees”… Myanmar helper Piang Ngaih Don (above) was killed by her employers in 2016.
