Advancing secondary traumatic stress research and practice.

Traumatology, Vol 31(4), Dec 2025, 457-458; doi:10.1037/trm0000646

This special issue exemplifies that enduring commitment by addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing contemporary human service organizations: secondary traumatic stress (STS). The professionals who dedicate their careers to serving trauma-exposed populations—whether in health care, child welfare, victim services, corrections, or antitrafficking work—consistently demonstrate remarkable resilience and commitment. Yet this essential work carries significant occupational risk. The 22 articles featured here reflect an evolution from documenting the problem to developing sophisticated, evidence-based interventions. Critically, this collection emphasizes a paradigm shift in moving beyond individual-focused solutions toward systemic, organizational approaches that recognize STS as fundamentally shaped by workplace contexts, structures, and cultures.
