The Couch: Belonging, Memory, and the Making of the Self—A Heartfelt Autoethnography

This heartfelt retrospective autoethnography explores a personal episode of adolescence through the lens of ritual, memory, and symbolic interaction. At the age of 14, after returning to Italy following years abroad, I found myself on the margins of a gang of boys whose shared language, stories, and music represented the codes of belonging I yearned to acquire. The focal point of this narrative is the ritual of “the Couch”—an informal, non-institutionalized rite of passage functioning as a test of bodily endurance and collective recognition. More than a childhood anecdote, the event is revisited here as a liminal passage and a performative social drama through which belonging is enacted rather than declared, and the Self is provisionally stabilized through interaction. The methodology is grounded in retrospective autoethnography, informed by symbolic interactionism and social constructivism, with particular attention to Mead’s notion of role-taking and Goffman’s understanding of the Self as fluid and situational. Through personal recollections, revisited places, and dialogues with those who shared that moment, I reflect on how narrative, memory, and shared belief systems produce liminality and reorganize degrees of belonging within a peer group, shape both individual and collective identity. This piece contributes to the field of autoethnographic and symbolic interactionist inquiry by illuminating how modest, everyday adolescent rituals operate as sites of becoming, where identity is not narrated into existence but performed, endured, and recognized through embodied participation and shared memory.
