At multiple points in forensic assessments, forensic mental health professionals may find themselves with compelling reasons to decline a referral or to opt out of an existing agreement to undertake or complete an evaluation. Starting with the initial point of contact with the referring party and then proceeding along the timeline of the unfolding assessment, reasons for considering withdrawing, as well as continuing, are identified, along with relevant major professional, ethical, and personal factors.
