Group psychotherapy for common mental health disorders: It is time to close the gap between scientific evidence and guideline recommendations.

Journal of Psychotherapy Integration, Vol 36(3), Sep 2026, 231-246; doi:10.1037/int0000382

Globally, there is an increasing demand for mental health care for patients with common mental health disorders. Offering more group therapy is a proposed solution, with specific advantages over individual forms. Evidence-based group treatment (EBGT) protocols are available but it is unclear whether they are recommended by various clinical practice guidelines. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of EBGTs for common mental health disorders and check whether these EBGTs are recommended in clinical practice guidelines. We identified EBGTs on the EBGT website of the American Psychological Association Division 49 and conducted a systematic search to select the most common and most recent clinical practice guidelines and their recommendations on group therapy. Efforts have been made to investigate possible causes for any observed differences, identify gaps, and provide recommendations for future research and clinical practice.
