Working with the alternative model for personality disorders: A case study illustration.

Journal of Psychotherapy Integration, Vol 36(1), Mar 2026, 10-24; doi:10.1037/int0000377

This article aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the holistic application of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) for students and professionals who may have limited experience with the model. First, the article introduces the AMPD, its two primary criteria, and some general background on its primary assessment instruments. Second, the article presents a vignette and discusses how the AMPD model can be used in case formulation, including a discussion of the categorical diagnoses that were retained for the AMPD and how they apply to the case, followed by guidance on how the AMPD assessment results can be incorporated into a feedback session, goal setting, and treatment recommendations. Last, the article provides a brief discussion of the psychometric properties of the model and primary assessment tools to guide clinicians and researchers.
