Sustained, desired change is necessary but elusive, and most attempts are ineffective or inefficient. That is, in part, because human change is a complex system. Sustained, desired change is possible by recognizing and using the multilevel context of any change, whether individual, team, organization, community, or country. Intentional change theory provides a fractal theory of sustained, desired change within each level and a more enduring sustained, desired change across levels. The multilevel intentional change theory is described with a brief review of empirical evidence within the framework of complexity concepts. Using concepts from complex systems, this paper discusses implications for improved research and practice. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)
